Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – Alpha Alpha Lambda Omega Chapter (AALO) was established on Sunday, December 8, 2019 in College Park, Maryland by forty-three members of the sorority. Under the direction of Mary Bentley LaMar, North Atlantic Regional Director, AALO became the first graduate chapter established under her tenure, the first four-letter chapter to be established in the North Atlantic Region and the fourth chapter established in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Prior to the establishment of AALO and with the support of the Alpha Kappa Alpha leadership, the group of 43 charter members affectionately known as “The First 43” formed the Prince George’s County Progressive Pearls (PGCPP), an official interest group of Alpha Kappa Alpha. These women strategically identified the Northwestern corridor of Prince George’s County, MD as an area of the county that could benefit from the presence and impact of programs and services offered by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. As an interest group PGCPP donated over 680 pairs of shoes to the Soles 4 Soles Foundation, implemented social media campaigns promoting heart health and active living, donated 130 pairs of eyeglasses to the Lions Club International and 80 articles of clothing to Hope4Haiti Foundation, participated in the 7th Annual 5K Run/2K Walk for HBCU Alumni Community Day, walked in solidarity for Breast Cancer Awareness.

PGCPP also dedicated themselves to supporting Black dollars and businesses. The group intentionally supported minority-owned businesses in Northwestern Prince George’s County. This included hosting events and fundraisers at minority-owned facilities and contracting minority service providers to assist with expanding their business clientele. The group also maintained a commitment to education by donating to the Educational Advancement Foundation in support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and by donating uniforms and seasonal wraps to county elementary schools.
The group also established partnerships with social service agencies such as the Pauperism Project aimed at combatting homelessness, the Lutheran Social Service Agency aimed providing support to asylum seeking families and ManorCare Health Services in support of caregivers.

Today, this dynamic group of women, now known as AALO, has grown and continues to extend the reach of the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s progressive programming and services to the communities of Adelphi, Beltsville, Bladensburg, Cheverly, College Park, East Riverdale, Hyattsville, Langley Park, and Mount Rainier, Maryland.
